Police in northern China have arrested a former pop singer for allegedly molesting children, seven years after being discharged from a prison where he already served time for the same crime, authorities said Friday.

Hong Dou, born in 1970, was arrested on June 14 in a hotel in the city of Baotou in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The entertainer, now working as an event promoter, was preparing for Hong Kong star Jacky Cheung's solo concert in the city in September, local police authorities said.

Hong, whose real name is Wang Liyong, was handed over on Friday to police in neighboring Hebei Province, where he was wanted on three charges of child molestation.

Hong was seen with two boys, aged 16 and 17, in his hotel room, but police said the two had nothing to do with to the charges Hong is facing.

Police investigating the case said Hong refused to comment on the charges.

According to Chinese law, people convicted of child molestation can face up to five years in prison. The law also sanctions more severe punishments for second offenses.

Hong was convicted by a Beijing court in 2002 on child molestation charges. He was released on bail in 2004 after serving two and a half years in prison. Hong quit singing at that time and has been involved in entertainment promotion since then.

Huang Shenyong, vice head of Baotou's psychological counseling association, said Hong's case has only exposed the "tip of an iceberg" of psychological illnesses troubling Chinese celebrities. He said the issue cannot be ignored.
