Hong Kong has three of top five in Asian university rankings

Three of the top five Asian universities are in the Chinese city of Hong Kong, while the other two in Japan and Singapore, according to latest Asian university rankings published on Monday.
In the 2011 rankings published by career and education network QS, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology overtook the Univeristy of Hong Kong to take the top spot, while the National University of Singapore remained at the third place. The University of Tokyo was the fourth, followed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Seoul National University.
The seventh to tenth positions were all taken by Japanese universities.
China's Peking University was ranked the 13th and Tsinghua Univeristy ranked the 16th.
Ben Sowter, head of QS intelligence unit, said the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the University of Hong Kong excelled as international universities. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is also becoming stronger in research and development.
Local daily Lianhe Zaobao quoted Sowter as saying that the National University of Singapore was also among the strongest in all the indexes and that the competition is close among the top Asian universities.
