Chile's poet Oscar Hahn has been awarded the prestigious 2011 Ibero American Prize for Poetry known as "Pablo Neruda", the Culture Ministry announced on Thursday.

"The poetry of Oscar Hahn is of great value, of great transcendence in all of Ibero America; it has a validity that has allowed for his work to influence new generations as well as maintaining its closeness to classic poetry," the jury said, according to a statement from the ministry.

The award was presented to Hahn during a ceremony in Santiago and represents the second time a Chilean author wins this award after Carmen Berenguer in 2008 won the same award.

The award is presented by the National Council of Culture as well as the Book and Reading Fund.

Hahn, who was born on July 6, 1938, in the northern Chilean city of Iquique, studied Literature at the University of Chile and is recognized as one of the great Chilean writers of the 1960s.

Hahn has won numerous awards for his work during the years, including the 1967 Single Prize of the First Zonal Contest of Nortina Poetry of the University of Chile, the 2003 Alerce Prize and the 4th House of the Americas Prize of American Poetry in 2006.
