Among the seven arts categories, for the first time, the Music prize went to an Chinese American composer Zhou Long for his opera "Madame White Snake," a deeply expressive opera that draws on a Chinese folk tale to blend the musical traditions of the East and the West.

The fiction Pulitzer goes to Jennifer Egan's "A Visit from the Goon Squad." Bruce Norris won the award for drama for his play " Clybourne Park."The history prize went to Eric Foner for "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery." Kay Ryan took the prize for poetry for "The Best of It: New and Selected Poems."

The Pulitzer Prize was established by Hungarian-American publisher Joseph Pulitzer and is administered by Columbia University in New York City. Each winner receives a certificate and a 10,000-U.S.-dollar cash award. The winner in the public service category of the journalism competition is awarded a gold medal.
