To avoid detention during the Spring Festival, a motor tricycle driver jumped into cold water of Linghu Lake in Linhai, Zhejiang Province, seeking a promise that he would not be detained after blood-alcohol testing.

Police pulled over the man, surnamed Tong, on a provincial road around noon on January 28, and tests soon confirmed Tong was under the influence. Police expected to take him to the station for further investigation.

But when they stopped minutes later to detain another driver, Tong overheard cops tell the drunken newcomer he would be kept in custody for 15 days, meaning he would spend the Spring Festival behind bars.

Pleading a bathroom break, Tong instead plunged into Linghu Lake.

"I will not come ashore unless you promise not to detain me," Tong told police.

Soon, Tong's family was called in to persuade him to drop his water-logged stance and a purple-lipped, shivering Tong agreed following 20 minutes' negotiations.

After a change of clothes, he was taken to the station where officers deducted 12 points off his driver's license and fined him.
