A rare winter thunderstorm hit Chongqing in the early morning of Nov. 11.

The thunderstorm lasted for nearly 10 hours and thunder was heard 310 times in total over the nine major urban districts. The thunderstorm was also accompanied by lightning that came out from the sky 5,758 times, according to statistics from the Chongqing Lightning Protection Center.

Experts said that it is very unusual for Chongqing to experience thunder in the month of November. However, this is a natural phenomenon, and not a sign of disaster.

The rare thunderstorm startled the Chongqing Lightning Protection Center. An observing staff member at the center said the first sounds of thunder were heard over the Chengkou District at 10:31 p.m. on Nov. 10, and the last was heard in Youyang County at 7:33 a.m. on Nov. 11.

Yubei District first heard the thunder and the thunderstorm in Jiangbei District ended at 4:41 a.m. on Nov. 11. The strongest lightning appeared over Pengshui County at 2 a.m. on Nov. 11.
