Love for sale: Merchants cash in on "Single's Day"

Nov. 11 is a special festival for China's single youth, and has been declared "Singles' Day."

Usually, singles hold various activities, such as a gathering or a party, in hopes of finding their partners for life and saying goodbye to their single days while relaxing and enjoying themselves.

Nov. 11 was designated as "Singles' Day" by China's single people because the day contains four Arabic numeral "1s." This special "Singles' Day" originated from China's campuses in the 1990s. Then, it spread rapidly on the Internet and has gradually generated a "Singles' Day" culture.

As the 2010 "Singles' Day" was approaching, many renowned Chinese websites published announcements such as "Saying Goodbye to Single Days" on their home pages, and they received a warm response from netizens.

Many merchants also found commercial opportunities and launched various commercial activities with the "bachelor" theme. In Beijing, a "love supermarket," which sells "love relationships" and "affection," has been opened to the public, where single young men and women can put their personal information and photos on the shelves and any single person can "shop" in the market free of charge.

In Hangzhou, many restaurants, KTV and wine bars have launched "Singles' Parties," and many KTV VIP rooms have been completely booked up. Marriage agencies all over the country also launched speed dating activities before "Singles' Day."

In recent years, single youth above the average age of marriage in China's large and medium-sized cities have gradually increased. According to statistics, there are over 500,000 young women who have not found their ideal life partners in Beijing alone. The main reason for this phenomenon is that these youth are too busy with their work or too picky.
