Liu Shenglan, an 88-year-old man in Zhaoyuan, Shandong Province, has paid for more than 100 poor children to attend school over the past 10 years, according to cnr.com.

Liu lives down an old lane in Sangzhuang Town in Zhaoyuan City. Every morning after having breakfast, he would take his simple basket and collect scraps outside. Later in the afternoon, he goes to collect the vegetables that are thrown out in the market. Starting 15 years ago, he began to fund the poor children, and he only eats the leftover vegetables instead of buying any food.

Liu happened to hear a story about a child living with his grandmother under rough economic conditions 15 years ago. He sent his monthly salary of 300 yuan to them without any hesitation.

"I knew the child was eager to go to school, but the economic condition of his family didn't allow him to do so. Then I decided to fund him. Instead of funding him only once, I sent money to them every year," Liu said.

Since then, whenever he saw on TV or in the newspaper that a child needed help for study, he would send money. The reporter found a large bag full of cash remittance.

One of the children who benefited from Liu's charity said that he believed he would not be so happy today were it not for grandfather Liu's help all these years.
