Qiqihaer city, in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, is to restore its "Russia Town" to its original appearance of a century ago, municipal authorities said Friday.

The block of 125 Russian-style buildings, including 117 residential buildings and eight public facilities, are clustered around the city's Luoxiya Avenue in Ang'angxi District.

"This is one of the largest and best-preserved old Russian architecture blocks in China," An Hongtao, head of the Ang'angxi District's archaeological authorities said.

The block was home to Russian railway workers and their families who had been working for the railway linking Siberia and northeast China built by Tsarist Russia for an occupation, An said.

"The buildings have high aesthetic values as they combine Chinese and Russian styles," An said.

The municipal government plans to relocate residents from the buildings in order to restore the interiors and facilities and eventually develop the block into a tourist attraction, he said.
