Veteran actress Liu Xiaoqing's search for something new has her taking the lead in a Shaanxi tourism company's song-and-dance extravaganza.

With her short curly hair, shining silver gown, black-striped tights and 10-cm high-heel shoes, she looks like a 20-something but up close, the make-up scarcely conceals the tell-tale crow's feet at the corner of her eyes and lips. The vicissitudes of life have clearly left their mark on 55-year-old actress Liu Xiaoqing.

A controversial figure, she has often been criticized for playing much younger women, when her peers are either retiring or taking on grandma roles. But Liu is unfazed.

"I am young. I enjoy working with young people and always want to try something new," she says.

This time the "something new" is an open-air song-and-dance show On the E Pang Palace (E Pang Gong Fu) that Liu is producing in collaboration with the Shaanxi Qin E Pang Gong Tourism Company.
