A heated debate on whether to "defend the Chinese language" was recently raised in the "Strong China" blogs of People's Daily Online.

Zhao Qizheng (standing member of the CPPCC and spokesperson of the third session of 11th CPPCC National Committee)

Liang Heng (NPC member and former deputy chief editor of People's Daily)

Jiang Shaogao (CPPCC member and deputy director of the Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports Committee under CPPCC)

Lu Guoshu (CPPCC member and chief editor of the People's Daily Overseas Edition)
Huang Youyi (CPPCC member and chief editor of the China International Publishing Group)

The pros: the Chinese language is being invaded by English, and the government should take strict measures to stop it, otherwise the Chinese language will become a weird mixed language sooner or later which is neither pure Chinese nor pure English.

The cons: it is just part of the globalization, and there is no need to entertain baseless fears. Meanwhile, several members of the NPC and CPPCC have submitted a proposal of maintaining the purity of the Chinese language. Since this issue has drawn wide attention among Chinese intellectuals and netizens, reporters interviewed the initiators of the proposal.
