With decades of double-digit economic growth, China has made great strides in all facets of its society.

While at the same time China is overwhelming the world with its economic boom, the country has also been stereotyped as a "world factory" that only knows how to churn out shoddy products or copy from others, but lacks of the ability to create their own.

The argument may no longer apply to the country's jewelry designs as China is set to stand out as a genuine creator in this field.

The awards ceremony of the 6th China Jewelry Design (Zhaoyi Cup) Contest, themed "Chinese style, Chinese originality", which was held Saturday, in Beijing, once again shows this.

"I see a great improvement in both jewelry craftsmanship and design in this year's contest compared to the previous one. The designs really give me a surprise. I think Chinese jewelry is moving fast to change from 'Made in China' to 'Created in China'." said Wang Chunli, the chief judge of the Contest and also Vice President of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC).

After a one year process of collecting, manufacturing and selecting pieces, the 6th China Jewelry Design Contest, co-sponsored by National Gems & Jewelry Technology Administrative Center (NGTC) and GAC, and organized by China Gems Magazine concluded with one top prize, two second prizes, three third prizes and one best craftsmanship prize awarded in each of the five categories of sportswear, career wear, casual wear, party wear and banquet wear jewelry designs.

"In this contest, jewelry is specifically designed for five different categories of dress. It's our first such attempt and also the highlight of this contest. I think it provides our jewelry designers with greater sources and space for creativity." said Bai Jingyi, a master of China's traditional arts and crafts who is also deputy judge in this contest.

Jonathan G. Kendall, Director of Global Operation of Forevermark told CRI that he was glad to see a significant internationalization of China's jewelry design in the last ten years. He also hoped that the design of beauty and aspects of the Chinese culture will be maintained in Chinese jewelry designs.

"China, with its own concept of beauty, will also have its own concept of jewelry design, which is quite culturally diverse around the world." Mr. Kendall also said.

Since 1999, the China Jewelry Design Contest is held every two years to foster Chinese designers and to develop international views on the Chinese jewelry industry. The sixth event was also held in conjunction with the second China Jewelry Photography Contest.
