About 1.5 million volunteers gathered on Sunday in Shanghai to mark the annual International Volunteer Day and promote next year's World Expo, the Jiefang Daily reports.

On the same day, an online platform offering the latest information about volunteer projects was formally launched in the city. Web users can browse more than 1,000 projects in Shanghai's 18 districts when they log on to www.volunteer.sh.cn. Citizens who are committed to social services will be able to easily find a variety of projects, including assisting with transportation, security and interpretation.

The Shanghai World Expo, which begins next May, started recruiting volunteers on May 1, 2009, to greet an anticipated 70 million visitors from both home and abroad. Some 70,000 volunteers will offer services inside the Expo Park, while another 100,000 will be recruited to work at more than 1,000 service stations around the city during the six-month event.
