Now, from a man who has been getting plenty of appreciation and recognition recently, director Zhang Yimou's much anticipated comedic thriller "A Simple Noodle Story" is about to join in the competition for the new year movie season.

And recently, the director has released a few scenes and location shots from the film to give fans a sneak peak at funnyman Xiao Shenyang and Yan Ni, who star along with cool-guy Sun Honglei.

"A Simple Noodle Story" is the first comedy thriller by the accomplished filmmaker Zhang Yimou, who directed the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Xiao Shenyang, a supernova of folk opera in northeast China, never expected to land the role. He gained unexpected fame from an appearance at this year's Spring Festival Gala. Xiao says he was extremely flattered to be in Zhang's movie. He was grateful that Zhang's patience helped dispel his nervousness.

Sun Honglie is famous for his television roles as tough characters. Sun says that Zhang has an unfailing ability to get the best from actors and capture their best moments.

Zhang Yimou himself contributed the lyrics of the film's theme song, and he invited Xiao Shenyang to sing the number. The tune is saturated with rap and pop music elements, complemented by traditional northwest folk melodies.

Following box office successes such as "Heroes," Zhang is confident of having success with "A Simple Noodle Story".
