Veteran Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, known for his comedies, is now working on a movie about the Tangshan Earthquake in 1976. The production team held an opening ceremony on Tuesday in the city, with silent tribute to the earthquake victims some 33 years ago.

Director Feng Xiaogang was there with lead actors Xu Fan, Chen Daoming, Zhang Guoqiang, Chen Jin, Lu Yi and Li Chen.

On July 28th, 1976, a deadly earthquake jolted Tangshan in Hebei Province, whick killed more than 240-thousand people.

The movie is set against the backdrop of the disaster. It revolves around the life of a 7-year-old survivor.

It also examines the mental traumas suffered by victims in the aftermath.

Director Feng Xiaogang said, "There will be people feeling very sad after watching this film. But I think this is actually a picture that warms your heart, because it centers on the affection among family members who, still stay together after the quake and rebuild their faith in life."

Director Feng Xiaogang made a point of casting Chen Daoming. Chen lived through Tangshan earthquake himself and says he remembers it vividly. In the movie Chen plays a military officer.

The collaboration between Feng and Chen began decades ago in the TV series "A Beijinger in New York" and "Chicken Feathers on the Ground."

The two are also close friends off the screen.

Feng Xiaogang said, "I once chatted with Chen Daoming. He said if I were to shoot a film about the earthquake, he'd play a role free. Because he experienced the Tangshan earthquake himself, he knows exactly how the quake victims feel and he wants to contribute his efforts."

Feng Xiaogang said, “The collaboration between Feng Xiaogang and his better half Xu Fan are also generating a lot of talk.”

Actress Xu Fan said, "I think our collaboration is something natural. I do think so, because he always casts an actor who fits his or her role the best. I'm glad the role I portrays suits me very well."

The film has a big budget of around 2-hundred million yuan. And the director says he's confident about the box office returns.
