An increase in births in the June 2007 year led to the highest natural increase in New Zealand since 1992, Statistics New Zealand said Friday.
It said births exceeded deaths by 33,150 in the June 2007 year.
There were 61,610 births registered in New Zealand in 2007, up 3,360 (5.8 percent) from the June 2006 year.
New Zealand population is now around 417 million.
This is the highest number of births since 1972, when 64,510 births were registered.
In the June 2007 year, there were increases in fertility rates for all age groups.
Women aged 30-34 years had the highest birth rate (127 births per 1,000 women aged 30-34 years) followed by those aged 25-29 years (111 births per 1,000 women).
The median age (half are younger, and half older, than this age) of New Zealand women giving birth was just above 30 years and has been relatively stable since 2003.
A newborn girl can expect to live 81.9 years, and a newborn boy 77.9 years, said Statistics New Zealand.
It said life tables for 2004-2006 show that the gap between female and male life expectancy has narrowed from 6.4 years in 1975-1977 to 4.1 years.
