Google has launched Google Dictionary, which provides users with synonyms and definitions. In addition to providing definitions from its own proprietary database of words, it also provides definitions provided by a wide variety of scholarly sources. One can bookmark words and come back later, view a list of recent searches, and even translate words into different languages.

The company that will feel the greatest pain from this recent initiative is expected to be Answers.com. Previously, Google would link back to Answers.com when a user clicked on the "definition" button, but now all those links go directly to Google Dictionary. This may be a challenge to Answers.com resilience; which could lose substantial traffic and a corresponding loss of advertising revenue.

Many current online and offline dictionary providers may also suffer as Google Dictionary attracts web traffic.
