Twitter, the popular micro-blogging website, may soon allow users to upload short videos. The proposal which is being discussed amongst Twitter founders will enable users to post video from mobile phones and other devices

Third party sites Twiddeo and Tweetube already allow Twitter users to post video tweets but have failed to gain the same popularity as a similar external service Twitpic, which allows the uploading of far failed to gain as much popularity as similar external service Twitpic.

Twitter's founders hope the addition of live video-tweeting will boost the prominence of the social-networking site. While Twitter remains popular, some high profile users have abandoned the site. British singer Lily Allen and Hannah Montana actress Miley Cyrus recently closed their Twitter accounts. Allen's last tweet read, "I am a neo-Luddite, goodbye."

Nonetheless others continue to use the social networking site to promote ideas, products or to disseminate news. Some of Britain's biggest tweeters include Stephen Fry with 810,000 followers and Sarah Brown, the prime minister's wife, who has 840,000 followers.

The site has played a major role in news events. Twitter was an active platform for protesters during the Iranian elections and in January 2009, a ferry passenger was the first person to post pictures of people being rescued from an airliner in New York's Hudson River.

Barack Obama used Twitter as a campaign tool and several health authorities also use the micro-blogging service to put out alerts to the public. The service has also become invaluable to news organisations and journalists. While Twitter has an estimated 54 million people using the service every month, the site has yet to find a way of making money. However it has been valued at 950 million U.S. dollars.
