Many people have fallen victim for the elegy of the nation in a recent massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu province. On Sunday, August 15, Chinese national flags across the county and at overseas embassies and consulates were lowered to half-mast to mourn the mudslide victims. Public entertainment was suspended in a show of deep mourning on Sunday.

As of 4 p.m. August 14, the devastating mudslide, which ravaged Zhouqu country, Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Gansu province a week earlier had killed at least 1,239 people and 505 others were listed as missing. A sobbing father named Han Rudong braided for the last time the hair of his eight-year daughter Han Xuan, who had got killed and dug out from the 5-meter deep mud. And a boy strained in ruins despite great pains, asked relief workers to "rescue his mother first"…. Thinking of all this, we feel as though we had experienced the same sorrow inflicted by the mudslide disaster.

Premier Wen Jiabao, who came to the devastated area on Sunday, urged the thousands of rescue workers at the scene to hasten efforts to locate survivors and provide relief to about 45,000 people who have been evacuated.

The mudslide victims are our kith and kin related by flood, who share with us the weal and woe. Fraternal affections and sentiments are the deepest and most profound feelings at the hearts of Chinese people. When bowing to mourn those killed in the mudslide, we wish them to rest in peace and all those living cheer up.

Mourning is to commend the value of the human life. Following devastating earthquakes that jolted Wenchuan county in Sichuan province in May 2008 and Yushu county in Qinghai province on April 14 this year, the "five-star"national flag is once again lowered to half-mast to prioritize the value of the common citizens'life, so people will have the full trust and loyalty to their motherland, and their nation will rise up in setbacks and march forward in trials. In mourning those departed, we feel the dignity of the life and go all out to boost confidence and pick up the courage for the continuous advance.

Mourning is to condense our unyielding power. From enduring severe droughts in southwestern China to the massive Yushu quake in western China, from sustained floods in northern and southern China to the mudslide in Zhouqu county, 1.3 billion people in China have since the start of 2010 tempered their will and pooled their strength to tide over current difficulties.

The mourning held across China, a simple, unvarnished national ceremony, has plucked up and stirred the heartstrings of million upon million of people, merged their shared feelings into a strong motive force, and helped promote the national unity and progress.

In mourning, we voice in unison and shed tears of grief together and, "trials and tribulation regenerate a nation", and the entire nation is all more closely linked to its own "community of faith".

For seven days and nights, Zhouqu county in Gansu has been always on the minds of people across China. It is definitely owed to the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council, or the Chinese government, an all-out effort of CPC committees and local governments at various levels, the extreme stamina and valor of the People's Liberation Army (CPC) and armed police, the superiority of the socialist system, the undaunted spirit of locals and full cooperation of the people of all ethnicities in China to the eventual victory in triumphing over the mudslide disaster.

When we bow our heads to mourn, we offer silent condolences to mudslide victims and are also truly moved by valiant rescuers, propped up by the support of socialist system and encouraged by the national faith and the sole purpose of the country's governance or administration.

Sticky, mud Roads in Zhouqu county are still around, shops and stalls have begun to resume business, relief operation goes on and arrangements for post-disaster reconstruction are underway. The nationwide mourning is aimed to console those who lost their lives in mudslide and inspire the people nationwide. When we mourn those who have disappeared in mudslide, we condense the unyielding strength, which is sure to result in Zhouqu's rebirth and spur China to advance forward.
