The China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue was jointly established by the two countries in April 2009 and was an important mechanism to promote China-U.S. bilateral relations in the new era. It aimed at promoting in-depth communications on the strategic and overall problems of long-term development in China and the United States. The dialogue does not simply combine the past China-U.S. Strategic Dialogue and strategic and economic dialogue into one, but takes the two countries' cooperation to a higher level.

China and the United States had frank and in-depth exchanges and reached a broad consensus in the first round of dialogues. In the context of the international financial crisis, the first round of dialogues showed the two countries' firm determination on the establishment of an active, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century and determination in overcoming difficulties together with other countries.

The second round of strategic and economic dialogue is a major event in light of recent China-U.S. disputes that aroused wide concern from the two countries and even the international media.

"The solution of the global problem cannot simply rely on the United States or China. Without their joint participation, however, the related problems certainly cannot be resolved," said U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Facing increasing global challenges in the 21st century, China and the United States have a broad basis for cooperation and will take on more important common responsibilities on many major issues concerning global stability and prosperity. The strategic and economic dialogue had highlighted the strategy and global nature of China-U.S. relations. A Chinese scholar had said, "The China-U.S. dialogue will play a significant role in stabilizing the global economy as it is undergoing a transformation from a period of crisis to a stable and healthy period of post-crisis."
