"Two Olympics, equal splendor", this is China's commitments to the world. 2008 Beijing Olympic Games has achieved great success and left rich material and spiritual wealth which will become the foundation of the smooth operation of Beijing Paralympic Games.
Experience learned from success and same concepts
The success of the Beijing Olympic Games served as a prologue for the Paralympic Games. The careful arrangement of the competition, the zero-defect design of the Olympic Village, the enthusiasm of volunteer service, the stringency and high efficiency of the security…all of these have impressed the whole world as well as become valuable experience of the Paralympic Games.
There are a total of 20 competition venues and six independent training venues serving the entire Paralympic Games. All of them are Olympic competition and training venues. Designers of these venues have considered the needs of the Paralympic Games at the beginning of planning and made the venues comprehensively accessible and barrier-free. Within the several days between the shut down of the Beijing Olympic Village and the opening of the Paralympic Village on August 30th, the conversion work has been carried out smoothly and orderly. Also benefited from the idea of precise co-coordinating design, the Paralympic Village has been able to retain the basic functions of main areas and set-up distribution of the Olympic Village, and equipped with barrier-free facilities of international standards. In the athletes' room, the height of clothes shaft of the wardrobe has been lowered down by only a few centimeters, which is much easier for people sitting in a wheelchair to reach, while won't cause trouble for athletes in normal height and requires no need for extra cost on transformation.
Outside the stadiums, many urban public transport facilities are ready before the start of the Paralympics, which provide pleasant and convenient traffic condition to disabled people.
During the Olympic Games, Beijing Olympics volunteers have won praises from people from various countries. Of the 440,000 Paralympics volunteers, 90% were Beijing Olympic volunteers. "Olympic Games have taught a lot to the volunteers. They can use their rich experience in the Paralympic Games and serve as the main force in the Paralympics." Kou Yulin, vice manager of audience services of Paralympics Road Cycling Games said: "Respecting all, understanding all, helping all and trying our best for sincere cooperation. The spirit remains unchanged."
Focusing on details reflecting humane care
Paralympic athletes are somewhat special. Some tailor-made measures have, to the greatest extent of possibility, met the requirements of the participants. Designers have been focusing on details, which reflect their human consideration and care for disabled athletes in both competition and daily life.
"Either in Olympic Games or Paralympic Games, athletes both have strong will and indomitable fighting spirit. In that respect, we do not see any difference between the people we serve." Luo Jinwen, lead of the volunteers of Tsinghua University said, "However, in terms of concrete work, Paralympic Games has a higher standard of service. There are a lot of detailed requirements reflecting the thoughtful consideration for people with disabilities." In order to better serve the Paralympic Games, volunteers accepted the special training again. The stadium Luo Jinwen is responsible for will be the competition venue for wheelchair basketball. Nursing and treatment training on common injury in wheelchair basketball games have become their new curriculum.
Speaking of the main point of the services for disabled persons, "detailed and intimate" are the standard for volunteers to always keep in mind: when seeing audience using a wheelchair, if not asked for help, then only need to nod and smile instead of volunteering for help; when speaking to people in wheelchair, they need to squat or sit down in a chair; for helping purpose, they should not arbitrarily take away any items from the hands of the blind …
These training focusing on details have let the volunteers understand the profound meaning behind service requirements. It is precisely these details that reflect the respect for the individual, trust for others, transposition thinking, and humane care.
Social care and warmth everywhere
When the Paralympic Games is approaching, the whole community is increasingly concerned about people with disabilities and creating a warm atmosphere. This is the prerequisite for the success of the Paralympic Games, as well as a valuable asset which helps the Paralympic Games promote social progress.
In streets and lanes, we can easily find moving scenes around disabled people: people consciously give way to blind line, extend a warm hand to guide the blind people getting on a bus, and volunteer in loading the wheel chair to the ground…
For watching Paralympic Games, the originally strict order for traffic control have also become more human: with related document blind people can have their guide dogs access to all competition venues and public places with them; holders of special permits can drive their cars no matter what ending number of their plate are, even or odd; people with lower limb disabilities or mobility difficulties can have their car stop by in the nearest road access for getting off.
As Mr. Riggs, director of Strategic Projects of the International Paralympic Committee said, "Disabled athletes are all very powerful genius in their own projects. We should even forget they are "disabled" when serving them."
