Chinese President Hu Jintao will pay a state visit to Ukraine at the invitation of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. This is the first visit by a Chinese head of state to the Ukraine in 10 years. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Konstantin Grishenko gave a written interview to People's Daily before the upcoming visit, during which he spoke highly of China-Ukraine ties and is looking forward to the visit.

Grishenko said that China-Ukraine relations are in its best state since bilateral ties were established. Pushing forward the cooperation between China and the Ukraine in various fields is a priority task of the Ukrainian president and government. Ukraine and China are time-tested old friends.

China and Ukraine have a long history of friendship and hold the same or similar stances on a series of major international issues. Both sides have enormous potential to cooperate in fields such as economy, trade, investments, technology and culture. The high-level exchanges between China and Ukraine have been more active since early 2010. Maintaining regular exchanges, raising mutual understanding and trust and deepening bilateral pragmatic cooperation have become main features of the current China-Ukraine relationship.

Grishenko believes that China is a major power in international politics and the global economy and is Ukraine's friendly partner. After the Ukraine made a unilateral declaration to forgo its nuclear program and join the "Non-Proliferation Treaty," China has promised to provide Ukraine with security guarantee. Ukraine also regards China as a model in economic and social development. Ukrainian has given the top priority to China-Ukraine relations in developing its political and economic ties with other countries.

Grishenko noted that cooperation with China is a key contributor to the successful economic modernization of Ukraine. During Yanukovych's visit to China, the two countries will sign a series of cooperation agreements in foreign trade, investments, technology and other fields, which reflect their common aspiration to conduct effective and pragmatic cooperation.

Grishenko said that as Ukraine is making efforts to establish a strategic partnership with China, Hu's visit and a short-to-mid-term cooperation agreement would likely accelerate this process. During Hu's visit, the two sides will also discuss long-term cooperation in certain large-scale strategic projects.

Ukrainian president, parliamentary speaker and the prime minister all spoke highly of China-Ukraine relations and said that they are looking forward to Hu's visit.

Yanukovych said that President Hu's visit would push forward China's relations with Ukraine in the established direction.

Volodymyr Litvin, speaker of Ukraine's parliament, said that people from all walks of life in the Ukraine are looking forward to Hu's visit, which they believe will open a new page in China-Ukraine relations. Mykola Azarov, prime minister of the Ukraine, said that the two heads of state, two governments and two parliaments share a common aspiration to maintain the sound development of the friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.

Furthermore, Ukraine is willing to actively carry out pragmatic cooperation with China in economic, scientific, educational, cultural and other fields.
