Chinese President Hu Jintao shared his views on promoting the healthy and stable growth of Sino-U.S. relations in the long term and other issues in a joint written interview with the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, which has attracted international media attention.

Hu not only answered questions about Sino-U.S. relations, but also elaborated on issues ranging from tackling the international financial crisis as well as the role of the U.S. dollar and RMB internationalization to China's relations with the Asia-Pacific countries and other issues. Hu’s answers, which were comprehensive, profound and farsighted, set the correct direction for the long-term healthy and stable development of Sino-U.S. relations.

The general tone of international public opinion was that Sino-U.S. relations have long transcended bilateral relations. It not only relates to the well-being of the two peoples, but also concerns world peace and stability, the international situation in the 21st century and even the entire world.

Sino-U.S. relations can always overcome the obstacles in spite of the twists and turns encountered in the 40 years after China and the United States re-established the diplomatic ties, because the leaders of the two countries have strategic vision and extraordinary courage, which enables them adapt to the times and grasp historic opportunities.

Cooperation is the theme that has been reinforced continually throughout the course of development of Sino-U.S. relations. Because of enhanced cooperation, Sino-U.S. relations have maintained stable development in general.

In the past two years, the two countries agreed to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century. They established a strategic and economic dialogue mechanism. They carried out practical cooperation in trade, energy, environment, terrorism, law enforcement, culture and other areas. They maintained close communication and coordination in coping with climate change and the international financial crisis. The strategic content and the global influence of Sino-U.S. relations have continued to grow.

Over the past two years, Sino-U.S. relations have made important headway. High-level exchanges and close communication at all levels has been more intensive than ever, and the two countries' have shown unprecedented strong will and determination to strengthen cooperation. They have more converging interests than ever. The two peoples were more deeply involved in the process of Sino-U.S. relations than ever. The two countries' communication and cooperation on major international and regional issues has been more frequent than ever.

Given many differences between the two countries, strategic mutual trust is most needed for the exchange. Increasing mutual trust relies on dialogue, communication and cooperation. One step forward in cooperation will bring mutual trust to a higher level. With increased mutual trust, the development of Sino-US relations will be more smooth and stable.

The key is to abandon the "zero-sum" Cold War mentality in order to continue to carry Sino-U.S. relations forward. Both countries need to treat the other side's growth in an objective and rational manner. They should respect each other's path of development and adhere to mutual benefit and common development.

Respect for each other's core interests is especially important in carrying the Sino-U.S. relations forward. In the process of cooperation they should properly handle each other's major concerns and reduce false judgments.

To continue to move Sino-U.S. relations forward means expanding common interests, so that the two become partners in the broader fields.

China is the world's largest developing country and the United States is the world's largest developed country. In today's multi-polar world, where economic globalization continues to deepen, there is no historical example for the two countries to follow. Both sides must promote cooperation with great wisdom and grand strategy.

Equality and respect form the basis for communication. Mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation decide the level of cooperation that can be attained. As long as the two countries strengthen pragmatic cooperation, they will definitely take more concrete steps, bring new hope and opportunity and open a new chapter for win-win cooperation.
