Cable News Network (CNN) was again singled out for condemnation of slandering China following its distortion of riot pictures. Its host Jack Cafferty said in a TV show on April 9 that the Chinese products are 'junk' and the Chinese people 'basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years.' His malicious verbal attacks on China and the Chinese people ignited great indignation amid the Chinese community in San Francisco, which has just hosted the Beijing Olympic torch relay. The American Chinese called for online joint signature actions to intensely protest against CNN, and demand apology from CNN for insulting Chinese and a punitive step on its host, Jack Cafferty.
CNN is lying again. Since its cropped photo of Lhasa riot misled public opinion in March, CNN has lost its credibility among the Chinese audience at home and abroad. 'Don't be like CNN' has become the most popular cyber language in 2008. Not accidentally, Cafferty again targeted China and went even further to insult the Chinese people. What a despicable and ugly performance!
Why Cafferty remains obsessed by his baseless prejudice and discrimination against Chinese? Why he sticks to his ignorance while resisting the hard facts: American Chinese have always been dubbed as the model community.
Since 1950s, the population of American Chinese has been growing in bounds and leaps at the rate of doubling every ten years. Following 1987, the Chinese mainland has become the main source of American Chinese. In 1990s alone, 460,000 mainland Chinese settled in the U.S. Among the total American population, those born in China climbed up to 1.83 million by the end of 2005. The total population of American Chinese thus far has risen to 3.3 million.
It has enjoyed a history of 200 years for the mainland Chinese to emigrate to the U.S. The early immigrants did much to change the outlook of the vast but backward American Frontier, by exploring and taming the wildness in the West, and developing the local economy. Their contributions are well-documented and will be memorized by history. In recent decades, the American Chinese have attained great achievements in developing American science and technology, which is a widely acknowledged. As a super power, U.S has established the strategic partnership with China, home to 'goons and thugs' as Cafferty remarked. One must wonder if it is a mistaken decision made by American authorities or Cafferty and his like keeps ignorant and blind to both history and reality.
Journalistic professionals should abide by their ethics, but CNN's recent reporting programs completely went against the principles of being objective and balanced that it often claimed as its basic standards for news coverage. The serious violence of professional ethics of journalism can be traced down to the insulting words Jack Cafferty used in his show when he said that Chinese products are 'junk.'
The U.S is the second largest trading partner to China, and the bilateral trade volume in 2007 reached 302.1 billion dollars, the first time to breach the mark of USD 300 billion. China's export volume to the U.S has come to 232.7 billion dollars, in particular, the exports of home appliances, electronic products and machinery equipment all amounted to 50 billion dollars.
Although trade conflicts on exports persist in bilateral trade, Sino-US trade relationship generally remains on a sound track. If Chinese products were real 'junk', how could the Chinese exports mainly related to processing trade account for such a high percentage in the bilateral trade? And Why the U.S would rather import the costly dumps of 'junk' from China? Jack Cafferty might well firstly manipulate those who have personal experience in use of the Chinese products and have developed some sentimental attachment to Chinese goods.
'A just cause enjoys abundant support while an unjust cause finds little support', as the old Chinese saying goes. The truth will never be distorted by somebody's vile words and deeds. What a shame on CNN, as a popular media, violating journalism ethics, denigrating China in a despicable manner, turning a deaf ear to the popular will, and harming the public sentiments! What Jack Cafferty remarked in actuality not only brought to China and the Chinese people unbearable insults, but more injuries to CNN; and it would be a deadly blow to CNN's public credibility.
