The ongoing Olympic torch relay around the world has drawn high attention and enthusiastic welcome of various countries and their populace. People, too, have also heard some disharmonious voices, and the noise interference of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is among such voices.

Ms. Nancy Pelosi seems to object to whatever China does. This time, China is greeting the incoming grand event of the Beijing Olympic Games with an enthusiastic, nationwide attention, and the country is striving to run an Olympics with the highest national standards required to show achievements of the three-decade reform and opening-up that was launched in the late 1970s, and the entirely-new concepts on international cooperation and a shared glory. But the US House speaker seems quite resentful of this.

This US House Speaker reproached (the IOCC) for having given China the chance to host the Olympic Games. In her view, China still has a lot of drawbacks, so the country is not entitled to host the Olympics. But Speaker Pelosi did not think that the hosting of Beijing Olympic games represents not only the affirmation of the international community on China's three-decade reform and opening up, but also the legitimate rights and interests for a big nation with one fifth of the global population in a century since the birth of Olympic Games. China's holding of Olympics to promote the international sports exchanges and upgrade Games skills is precisely a support to the international Olympic games. In hosting the Olympics, the Chinese government and people are shown to do their best to the world peace.

US executive authorities contrast Pelosi in both words and deeds. The While House appreciated the readiness of the Chinese government and people to promote the world progress via sports exchange, and voiced the wish that China will spur its all-round national development and international exchanges. President George W. Bush has repeatedly expressed his plans to attend the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics in August, and a number of senior officials of his administration, too, hold that the active desire of 1.3 billion Chinese to contribute to the Olympics should be highly evaluated and treasured.

There exists wide-ranging cooperation between China and the United States, noted the US executive administration, and to support China to host Olympic Games smoothly represents a cooperative measure of the two nations to reach their mutual understanding precisely through sports and people-to-people exchange. There also exist a lot of differences between the two nations, and to enhance mutual understanding via cooperation is a positive way to overcome their differences and expand their cooperation.

As for the settlement of their differences, there are numerous ways and platforms, but pressures should not be imposed upon the Olympic Games and the Olympics should not be exploited to take the Chinese side as the hostage. So President Bush and his colleagues should be said to have taken a responsible approach on both concepts and actions to promote bilateral cooperation with regard to the Beijing Olympic Games.

When she saw it was really hard to overwhelm China and even the US executive authority, Speaker Pelosi instigated a proposal at Capitol in a bid to prohibit American officials to partake in the relevant activities of the Beijing Olympics with the use of federal funds, including its opening ceremony, and Bush administration, which has primary constitutional authority over the conduct of foreign affairs, gave her a flat refusal. Pelosi made irresponsible remarks at Capitol Hill but could not attain her aim by meddling in the conduct of foreign affairs by the American executive body.

Moreover, Pelosi also openly urged people to go to her hometown of San Francisco to add to the trouble. Pelosi holds the third highest office in the U.S. and, as the speaker of the House, she is naturally rated as a senior US leader. With her such a high-profile, she, defying law and discipline, supports Tibet independence elements to challenge the Olympic sacred fire, and to challenge the U.S. government's protection of Olympic torch relay. What she does has made people amazed and totally at a loss what to say. Such an American stateswoman often asks governments of other countries to abide by law, but she herself interferes with those issues to which the U.S. government has made security commitments.

The Beijing Olympics is the Olympic Games that belong to the world, that belong to the people of China, and that belong to the people of the United States, and it is the grand sports game China hosts for the whole world. We render our utmost service to the incoming Being Olympics not for others to give their excessive praises. Meanwhile, we also do not hope others to "turn black into white" to discredit China that is going to host the Games. Ms. Pelosi, however, can only discredit herself or impair her own image if she persists in embarrassing China.
