Zheng Xiaoyu, former head of China's drug watchdog, has been executed.

Zheng is another corrupt official to receive capital punishment after Cheng Kejie, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and Hu Changqing, vice-governor of Jiangxi province, east China, were executed in 2002, and Wang Huizhong, vice-governor of eastern Anhui province, was excited in 2004.

"He who keeps on doing evil is only digging his own grave," as a popular Chinese saying goes. As the former director of China's State Food and Drug Administration (SEDA), Zheng turned the sacred power in his hand bestowed by the people into bargaining counter to make money: He took in 6.49 million yuan (some 842,000 US dollars) in bribe and made inroads into the "great wall" of drug supervision and administration with his dereliction of duty.

Death penalty handed to Zheng Xiaoyu has fully proven the will and desire of the people across China, eloquently showed the spirit of the fairness and justice of legal sanction as well as the firm resolve of the Party and the state. For corrupt officials, no matter whoever he is, what a high position he occupies and how deep he has hid himself, probes into the cases he is involved will be carried out resolutely and thoroughly, but no indulgence or soft hand will be granted to him.

Death penalty handed to Zhing Xiaoyu indicates that laws are stipulated in explicit terms, penalty is meted out in strict compliance with his crimes, and punishments commensurate with his duty.

As the principal leading official in China's drug watchdog, he was entrusted with a very great mission and responsibilities in protecting people with drug safety; he should have abided by his duty, performed his official obligation cleanly, honestly and scrupulously, and used his power for the wholehearted service of people. However, he abused the authority of his office instead to make deals between power and money and accept bribes feverishly. Furthermore, he lowered the criteria for the drug examination and approval, issued and approved the names of drugs excessively and indiscriminately, and mishandle and misconduct matters to the neglect of the interests of the state and people.

In a word, what Zheng did has evoked grave consequences, seriously infringed upon the duty cleanness and honesty of the state functionaries, the normal work order of the state drug watchdog, endangered the health and safety of the people, tarnished the credit and trustworthiness of the state organ and wrought a most pernicious social impact.

Indeed, neither laws of the state nor the people in China can tolerate or pardon such vehement crimes as those committed by Zheng with most grave consequences.

In recent years, the Party's work style has been further improved with the growing intensity of the struggle to "combat corruption and build a clear government" waged by the Party Central Committee. A few individual Party officials, prompted by interests and money, nevertheless, have gone crazy to the defiance of laws, and Zheng and his ilk belong to such jackals from the same lair. They cast away the trust and expectations of the Party and people, the commitment of placing the people's interests above everything else as well as their oaths to work all their life for the cause of Communism … They have abandoned the Party's basic principles and requirements for wielding the political power for the sake of people.

Hence, we should be fully aware of the protracted nature, arduousness and complexity of the struggle to combat corruption and building a clean government and place the fight against corruption and for a clean government onto a more prominent position; we should keep to the principle of striking both causes and consequences in a comprehensive way, combining both penalty and prevention, and giving particular attention to prevention, and establish and continue to improve the system of both punishment and guarding against the corruption with due equal stresses on education, system and supervision,

It is imperative to keep up the work with leading officials so as to enable them to keep themselves incorruptible and self-disciplined, and to enhance education among Party officials with respect to the Party style of work and Party disciplines so as to let them to upgrade their sense of the Parry character. Moreover, it is imperative to educate Party officials in consciously observing Party disciplines and state laws, strictly abiding by the specifications in performing official duties honestly and cleanly, and resisting consciously temptations from the power, money and beautiful women.

It is imperative to keep up the work with the institution of the anti-corruption system, and employ a still better, improved system to exercise power, manage the use of money, personnel and other matters assidously and responsibly, so that corrupt elements will not have suitable, appropriate soils for their survival. Furthermore, it is imperative to beef up the restriction and supervision over the use of power and standardize the performance of power.

As part of the effort to cope with corruption, no "extraordinary and special" Party members are allowed to stay aloof the laws and no corrupted elements permitted to have any place to hide themselves. Whoever daring to commit outrages and run amuck in defiance of state laws will be subjected to severe punishment of the Party disciplines and the state laws.

May Party officials draw serious lessons from the negative example of Zheng Xiaoyu!
