When the Communist Party of China was founded 90 years ago, the Party committed itself to the historical mission and sacred responsibility of fundamentally accomplishing China's reunification and the solidarity of the Chinese nation and has made persistent struggles to achieve the goals. The Party's 90-year history, in a sense, is the struggle of the Party to lead the Chinese people in achieving the country's reunification and the solidarity of the Chinese nation.

In the course of revolution, construction and reform by the Chinese people under the leadership of the Party, the Party has always directly faced enormous challenges in the unification cause, represented the interests and will of the Chinese people, constantly put forward unification strategies and specific plans meeting the requirements of the times, persistently advanced the historical course of unification and forged a new situation for the unprecedented solidarity and unity of the Chinese nation.

China's socialist modernization drive entered a new period after the reform and opening-up policy was introduced at the Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee. The Party adhered to the themes of modern times, namely peace, development and cooperation. It brought forward the creative and imaginative policy of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems" to reclaim Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The Party has shown great sincerity and made great efforts to promote the peaceful reunification of China. It promised that despite the practice of socialism on the Chinese mainland, the three regions of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan can retain their established capitalist system for a long time in hopes that the entire country will achieve common prosperity and development.

Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese nation wiped away the humiliation it suffered last century and resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and Macao on July 1, 1997 and Dec. 20, 1999, respectively, by sticking to the basic state policy of "one country, two systems." Under the guidance of this policy, the Party led the Chinese people to break the deadlock of long-term confrontation and isolation between the mainland and Taiwan, to make a series of breakthroughs in cross-Strait relations, to open up the "three direct links" of trade, mail and air and shipping services across the Taiwan Strait, and to promote cross-strait exchanges and cooperation.

The Party has elevated the cross-Strait relations to a new level of "peaceful development" and is actively laying the groundwork for the peaceful reunification of the country. "This is both a festival for the Chinese nation and a victory for the universal cause of peace and justice," former Chinese President Jiang Zemin said at the handover ceremony of Hong Kong.

"Why can the Communist Party of China achieve a peaceful reunification with one country, two systems? Why can it lead the Chinese people to realize the return of Hong Kong and Macao and achieve significant breakthroughs in the relations across the Taiwan Strait?" The fundamental reason is that the CPC is the faithful spokesperson of the Chinese people's fundamental interests, the great, glorious and correct Marxist political party that can sincerely reflect and embody the historical development patterns and trends in China, and the core strength of leading the Chinese people to achieve national independence and liberation and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The new China would not exist without the Communist Party, and the rich, democratic, civilized and harmonious modern socialist new China would not exist without the Party, as well. We believe under the leadership of the Party, the Chinese people will achieve common aspirations at home and abroad, which is the great unity and reunion of the Chinese nation and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
