The 10th Tour of Qinghai Lake kicked off on Friday on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau which is dubbed "roof of the world".

Russian Shpilevsky Boris from TPT cycling team won the warm-up circuit race.

"Today's race is not very long, so the competition is fierce," Boris said after the race. "I could not get No.1 without my teammates' support. Hope we can do better in the upcoming stages."

A total of 217 riders from 22 teams, including six UCI pro continental teams, 12 UCI continental teams, three national teams and Hong Kong team, participated in the race.

The warm-up circuit race, which took place in the ethnic county Huzhu, consisted of nine laps with an overall length of 51.3 kilometers and its results won't be counted into the general classification.

The second and third place in the warmup race went to Sobrino Joaquin from Spanish Caja Rural team and V Australia's Kemps Aarori respectively.

The 10-day, nine-stage 2011 Tour of Qinghai Lake will for the first time witness the event extend to other provinces as a new stage is installed between Qinghai's provincial capital Xining and Gansu's capital Lanzhou and a circuit race added in Lanzhou.

Inaugurated in 2002 and joining UCI Asia Tour in 2005, the Tour of Qinghai Lake, the "highest" international road cycling race, has grown into the largest and top of its kind in Asia.
