Spanish BBVA Primera Liga club has confirmed an agreement to extend the contract of coach Mauricio Pochettino until the end of June 2014.

The agreement is the reward for the work the Argentinean has done during his three years at the club where he took Espanyol from a desperate battle to avoid relegation to a battle to qualifying for Europe.

Pochettino took over with Espanyol rock bottom of the BBVA Primera Liga midway through the 2008-9 campaign and his side is currently in eighth place in the league table.

"Espanyol and Mauricio Pochettino have reached an agreement to extend his contract until June 2014. Several months ago, we agreed to extend his deal until the end of June 2012 and that decision has been reinforced by this new agreement," confirms the Espanyol website.

"With this decision, the club strengthens its brave decision for a sporting project based on the youth system which Pochettino and Sporting Director Ramon Blanes, who also has extended his project until June 2014, has led," confirmed the club.

Under his guidance, players such as Javi Marquez, have taken over key roles of guiding the Barcelona based club to safety in the league, while the sale of other youth team products such as defender Victor Ruiz has gone a long way toward assuring the financial stability of Espanyol.

Espanyol entertain Athletic Club Bilbao in the Cornella El Prat stadium on Monday night.
