At home against Mirassol in the single round elimination of the quarterfinals of the 2011 Sao Paulo state championship, Palmeiras battled to a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

The win sent Palmeiras into the semifinals where it will face rival Corinthians.

Palmeiras scored the game's opening goal in the 10th minute of play. Finding an opening between two Mirassol defenders, Valdivia pelted a 28 meters shot that sailed into the upper left corner of the visiting team's net.

Mirassol tied the match just before halftime. In the 41st minute, Serginho's corner kick rattled around loosely in front of the Palmeiras net before Marcelinho tapped the ball into the far left side of the goal, scoring the equalizer.

Palmeiras reclaimed the lead in the 66th minute when Marcio Araujo took full advantage of a loose ball and slammed it past keeper Fernando Leal and into the lower right corner of the Mirassol goal. After taking the lead, Palmeiras focused on its defense to hold onto the lead and its qualification into the next round of the playoffs.

Palmeiras will face rival Corinthians in the semifinals. As both teams share the Pacaembu stadium, the location is definite. However, the date and time remain to be determined.
