After a tumultuous week Ajax needed a win to stay in the title race and they managed to do so. Ajax beat Heracles Almelo 3-0 on Sunday and are now trailing new leaders FC Twente, who beat PSV 2-0 on Saturday evening, five points and are three points behind PSV.

With the club board stepping down amid pressure from club legend Johan Cruijff the preparations for Sunday's match were far from perfect. Coach Frank de Boer also had to do without almost his whole defense with Jan Vertonghen suspended and Toby Alderweireld, Gregory van Wiel and goal keeper Maarten Stekelenburg injured. Daley Blind added his name to the injury list and was substituted by debutant Nicolai Boilesen in the first half.

Ajax did not give any chances away, but had problems in creating opportunities as well. Striker Mounir El Hamdaoui, who returned after a disciplinary ban, had a bad day and was booed by his own fans. Ajax took the lead in the second half after a free- kick by Miralem Sulejmani was handled badly by Heracles goal keeper Remko Pasveer and Oleguer could score from close range.

Siem de Jong and Araz zbiliz secured the Ajax victory and helped their team to stay in the title race with five games to go. Also on Sunday, FC Utrecht lost 3-2 at home to ADO Den Haag, Vitesse won the derby against NEC 2-1 and FC Groningen beat VVV- Venlo 3-2.
