Sevilla strengthened their bid for a top seven finish and a place in next season's Europa League with a comfortable 3-0 win over Sporting Gijon as Spain's matchday 26 kicked off on Tuesday night.

The result was rarely in doubt from the moment Luis Fabiano scored from the penalty spot after 28 minutes. Sporting's Sebastian Eguren was sent off for committing the foul that led to penalty and Sevilla had it easy against 10 men.

Diego Perotti doubled Sevilla's lead 10 minutes form half-time and Alvaro Negredo continued his excellent season by scoring his side's third goal with 25 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, fifth placed Espanyol were unable to follow up their 4-1 win over Real Sociedad from last weekend as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat at home to Mallorca.

Young striker Alvaro Vazquez put Espanyol in front after 18 minutes, but Mallorca were able to turn the game on its head in the second half.

Pierre Webo scored a powerful header after 62 minutes and then Emilio Nsue sealed the points from close range with eight minutes remaining. The Mallorca midfielder took advantage of a loose ball in the area after Espanyol keeper Carlos Kameni had blocked a shot.

Wednesday sees games between Zaragoza and Athletic Club, Villarreal and Hercules, Getafe and Atletico Madrid, Osasuna and Deportivo la Coruna and Real Sociedad and Levante before Barcelona 's visit to Valencia rounds the night off.
