Botafogo suffered a 1-0 loss to home team River Plate-SE in the 2011 Brazilian Cup opener on Wednesday.

Botafogo struggled to find any sort of offensive rhythm throughout the match. As the heavy favorite to win, Botafogo gave up the game's only goal in the 86th minute when Bruno Ramos passed the ball to an open Bebeto Oliveira in front of the net who then quickly pounded the ball past keeper Jefferson and into the Botafogo net.

The result leaves Botafogo in a must-win situation against River Plate-SE on March 3 when they play at home in the Engenhao stadium.

The winner of this year's tournament earns a spot in the 2012 Libertadores Cup.
