Real Madrid midfielder Kaka says he hopes to return to fitness to give his side a much needed boost in the New Year.

The back problems suffered by striker Gonzalo Higuain have left Real Madrid lacking players in attack and it is looking increasingly unlikely that the club will be buying anyone in the winter transfer market.

They will, however, be boosted by the return of Kaka. The Brazilian has not played this season after the discovery of an injury to the meniscus ligament on his left knee. He underwent an operation at the start of August and was expected to be out of action for four months.

Those four months have stretched into five but he is finally expected to recover in time to face Villarreal on January 9.

"If everything goes well, I expect to be back after Christmas. I am looking forward to be able to play again," he said in Friday's edition of sports paper AS.

Kaka cost around $90 million dollars from AC Milan in the summer of 2009, but has so far failed to live up to expectations due to a recurrent pelvic injury and now his knee problem.

His return would be a boost to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, who appears to have little faith in Karim Benzema to partner Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

Kaka is able to play as a second forward and would give Madrid greater options in one of the busiest moments of the football calendar.

If Real Madrid progress in the Copa del Rey they will play nine matches in January, while February sees the return of Champions League football when Mourinho will need as many players as possible to be available.
