Spanish BBVA Primera Liga club Villarreal will have to do without the services of Spain international defender Carlos Marchena for a month after it was confirmed that he has a torn hamstring.

Marchena, who joined Villarreal from local rivals Valencia over the summer, suffered the injury in the second half of his side's surprise 1-0 defeat away to Getafe on Saturday night.

Tests have shown a serious tear in his muscle and the 31-year-old will be out of action until the middle of January, meaning he will miss tomorrow's Europa league match away to Bruges.

He would have missed this weekend's home BBVA Primera Liga match at home to Mallorca through suspension, but the injury will also see him sidelined for his side's Copa del Rey game against his former club Valencia.

Marchena had started 13 of his side's 15 league matches this season and has been an important addition as Villarreal have reached third place in the league table.

Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido now has a selection problem ahead of the Mallorca match as Marchena's fellow central defender Musacchio is also suspended meaning that youngster Javi Catala will have to partner Gonzalo in a new-look defense.
