Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on Saturday night as his side came from a goal down to defeat Hercules in matchday nine in the BBVA Primera Liga.

The Portuguese international goals came in the last 10 minutes as Madrid fought back from a third minute goal scored by Hercules striker from David Trezeguet.

A bad error from Hercules goalkeeper Calatayud gave Di Maria a simple tap in seven minutes after the break to level the scores, before Ronaldo scored twice from close range in the last 10 minutes to give Real Madrid the win

Madrid's triumph put the pressure on FC Barcelona, but the reigning champions responded with a brilliant 5-0 win at home to Sevilla.

Leo Messi and David Villa scored two goals each and Dani Alves was alert to score with a close range volley.

Sevilla hardly had a chance and the game was over as a contest when Konko was sent off just before halftime.

Valencia and Zaragoza kicked Satuday off with a disappointing 1-1 draw in Mestalla.

Zaragoza defender Lanzaro scored for both sides in a result that is of little help to either side: Zaragoza remain without a win in nine matches, while Valencia have failed to win in their last three league games and were booed off the pitch by their demanding fans.

Sunday's matches saw Villarreal drop to third place after a 1-1 draw away to Sporting Gijon. Both goals came from the penalty spot with De las Cuevas putting the home side ahead before Rossi celebrated his 100th game for Villarreal by scoring the equalizer in injury time.

Racing Santander earned some breathing space with a 4-1 win at home to Osasuna. Rosenberg scored twice for the home side in a game that could have saved Miguel Angel Portugal's job.

Malaga coach Jesualdo Ferreiro is under pressure as his side lost 2-1 at home to Real Sociedad to drop into the relegation zone. Griezmann and Llorente scored for the Basque side.

Meanwhile Deportivo defeated Espanyol 3-0 to claim their first win of the campaign.

Adrian, Lopo and Colotto scored Deportivo's goals in what was their best performance of the season by a long way. but the Galician side remain in the bottom three.

Kun Aguero scored his first goal of the season for Atletico Madrid at home to Almeria, but Piatti scored a smart equalizer for the visitors on the stroke of halftime to give Juanma Lillo's strugglers an unexpected 1-1 draw.

Finally Athletic Bilbao produced an excellent display to beat Getafe in San Mames. Andoni Iriola, Mikel San Jose and Igor Gabilondo all scored in a comfortable 3-0 win for the Basques.

Mallorca entertain Levante on Monday to round off the weekend's matches.
