The Santos soccer team lamented to inform its fans and the media on Thursday that the club's star midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso will miss the next six months of action due to an injury.

During the team's 2-1 win over Gremio on August 25, the midfielder twisted his right knee, necessitating surgery.

After receiving a magnetic resonance image (MRI) the day after his team's game and the consequent injury, team doctors found a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Team doctors Rodrigo Zogaib and Maruicio Zenaide have declared the need to operate on Ganso's knee in order to correct the torn meniscus. Surgery is marked for Saturday, August 28, in a Sao Paulo hospital

"Ganso's time of recuperation should be around six months. Already on Monday, we expect Ganso to begin his process of physical therapy at the Center of Excellence in Prevention and Recuperation of Footballers (CEPRAF) with the Santos training facility," said Zenaide.

Ganso is expected to return to the field in March 2011, ready to help Santos in their quest to win the 2011 Libertadores Cup. The team earned the right to participate in the tournament by winning the 2010 Brazilian Cup.
