The win lifted Botafogo to third place with 24 points while Avai still stand in fifth place.
In Ceara's 2-1 victory, the team scored what would be this year's fastest goal, in the 40th second of play, thanks to an own goal from Gremio's Willian Magrao.
Gremio were able to tie the match in the 25th minute through Douglas, but Ceara reclaimed the lead in the 88th minute with a Geraldo strike.
Elsewhere, Prudente defeated Goias 2-1 with all the goals coming in the second half.
