Corinthians beat Gremio 2-1 at home on Sunday in the second round of the Brazilian championship.
It was Corinthians' second straight win in the championship that may help make up for the team's elimination from the Libertadores Cup.
Despite Ronaldo sitting on the Corinthians bench, the team was able to score in the 5th minute from Ralf, followed by Souza in the 64th minute. Gremio grabbed their only goal in the 74th minute through Maylson.
"It is very important to win these back-to-back games in the Brazilian Championship. Our elimination from the Libertadores Cup is forgotten," said Roberto Carlos.
Corinthians now have six points to top the standings. In the 3rd round, Corinthians will host Fluminense on May 23.
Gremio returns to the field on May 19 to face Santos in the return leg of the Brazilian Cup semifinals. Gremio won the first leg at home 4-3.
