Real Madrid Director of Sport, Jorge Valdano defended under pressure coach Manuel Pellegrini this Tuesday.

Pellegrini has been criticized by sections of the pro-Real Madrid press since Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to FC Barcelona with sports paper Marca going as far as saying he would be sacked at the end of the season and even publishing a list of candidates to replace him in the job.

All of this despite the fact that Real Madrid still has serious options of winning the BBVA Primera Liga title and that it has only dropped 16 points in 31 league games.

Speaking on radio station Cadena Ser on Tuesday morning, Valdano spoke in favor of the coach.

"Pellegrini was very disappointed after the game; however, he remains calm and feels he has the strength to carry on. One of his virtues is that he is able to recover quite quickly and every Monday is the same for him, whether we win 5-0 or whether we have lost against Barcelona. That balance is a blessing for a team that is always in the spotlight," said Valdano.

Valdano thought the Spanish press had not been fair with the Real Madrid coach.

"He has been treated harshly ever since his arrival," he said, before adding that the club was not questioning Pellegrini’s labor.

"He needs the support of the club and he has always had it. He is a person able to lead a group with authority and to take difficult decisions during a season that are understood and accepted by the players. He is a man with over 20 years coaching experience," he concluded.
