Real Madrid confirmed on Tuesday that it will be without the services of striker Gonzalo Higuain for three weeks.

Higuain, who has scored 11 goals in the BBVA Primera Liga this season, has torn a muscle in his left thigh.

That means he will be out of action for three weeks, in which time he will be forced to sit out Primera Liga games against Athletic Club Bilbao, Malaga and Deportivo la Coruna.

He is the second Real Madrid player to suffer a muscle injury in just 48 hours. Rafael Van der Vaart will also be sidelined for three weeks after tearing a calf muscle after just 20 minutes of Sunday's 2-0 win at home to Mallorca.

Higuain opened the scoring in that game, but his absence will now give a chance to 40 million euros signing Karim Benzema to make his claim for a first team place.
