Flamengo's striker Diego Tardelli went through surgery on Monday morning to treat an open fracture and is out of the 2008 season.

Tardelli fell on his right arm and broke it in two places during the match against Minas Gerais state's Cruzeiro, on Sunday afternoon. He spent three hours on surgery, and had to put two titanium plates and 16 screws on his arm.

Doctor Jose Luis Runco, Brazil's national team physician, performed the surgery. According to him, everything went well, but the striker will have to spend up to four months out of the fields.

As the Brazilian League, the only tournament Flamengo is participating in, ends in Dec. 7, Tardelli is likely to return only in 2009.

The doctor said Tardelli will be released from hospital later this week. Due to the gravity of the injury, the player will have to be in full rest for a while. Physical therapy is due to start in two weeks, and the striker will be able to run after four to five weeks.

Tardelli's injury is the latest on the long string of blows to affect Flamengo in the last month.

The club was the leader of the Brazilian League until the tenth round, in July 17. After that, it lost three matches and tied two, falling to sixth place and leaving the group of the first four teams in the ranking, which qualify to next year's Libertadores Cup.

Rival fans have already dubbed Flamengo the 2008 Paraguayan Horse. The name is given to the team that makes a great tournament start, holds the lead for several rounds and then runs out of steam.

The Paraguayan Horse is a regular phenomenon in the Brazilian League, and there is one almost every season.
