Canadian women soccer team arrives in Tianjin for Olympics
11:44, August 03, 2008

The Canadian national women's soccer team, looking forward to its Olympic debut, arrived in the Olympic co-host city Tianjin on Saturday.

Canada, in Group E with Argentina, China and Sweden at the Olympics, will face Argentina in its opening match here on Aug. 6.

"There is no injury in the team," the team's assistant coach Ian Bridge told Xinhua. "The first step is to reach quarterfinals."

The North American side just ended a one-week training camp in Singapore, where they drew 1-1 with New Zealand and crushed Singapore 8-0.

Canada has eight wins, five draws and five losses in 18 international matches this year and currently sits ninth in the FIFA rankings.

The team also held 1-1 with Olympic title favorites Brazil in a friendly match in July, sending a signal it was capable of competing with any team in the world.

Canada's top scorer Christine Sinclair, with 93 goals in 122 international games, will be the most dangerous player in this team. The powerful striker showed good shape in the Olympic build-up and scored the opening goal in the warm-up against New Zealand.

Tianjin, a large city adjacent to Beijing, will host 11 group stage soccer matches and a women's soccer quarterfinal at the Beijing Olympics.
