Hosts Benfica gained the first win of the season in the UEFA Champions League after beating Celtic of Scotland 1-0 through a late goal by Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardozo Wednesday night.
Benfica, which had a miserable start to the season with two straight defeats in Group D, dominated the match with relentless attacks under must-win circumstances in the Stadium of Light.
The Benfica strikers wasted numerous chances to open the score. At the 64th minute, a Cardozo shot hit the crossbar. Two minutes later, his attempt was stopped by the post.
At the 87th minute, Cardozo chested down a cross from Argentine substitute Di Maria, and volleyed past the Celtic's Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
With the win, Benfica rekindled its hope of making the knock-out stages of the Champions League. It is now on level with Celtic with three points from three matches.
AC Milan and Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk lead Group D, both with six points from three matches. Milan routed visitors Donetsk 4-1 on Wednesday night.
