The Brazilian women's national basketball team defeated Argentina 71-48 to seize the gold medal of the 2009 Americas Cup for the third time on Sunday in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso.
The Brazilians got off to a slow start and fell behind early in the game. However, the team's defense allowed the Brazilians to stay close. After finally warming up, the Brazilians took the lead in the second quarter and entered halftime with a 25-21 advantage.
The third and fourth quarters were dominated by the Brazilians. As the Brazilians opened the lead to 58-30, the Argentineans were forced to foul in order to stop the clock.
The strategy did not work as the Brazilians were nearly perfect from the free-throw line. Continuing their strict defense and executing on offense, the Brazilians simply waited for time to run out and celebrate their victory.
Brazil's forward Silvia was the game's leading scorer with 18 points. Alessandra added a double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling in 16 rebounds.
The women's team equaled the Brazilian men's feat. Both teams won their respective Americas Cup. The men won earlier in September in Puerto Rico. Also, as a result of both team's performances, they earned the right to play in the 2010 World Championships. The men will play in Turkey while the women will play in the Czech Republic.
