Madrid mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon announced here on Wednesday that the Spanish capital will bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Madrid failed in its bids to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, which were held in London, and the 2016 Games, which went to Rio de Janeiro.

"The Olympic spirit remains alive among citizens" in the city, Ruiz-Gallardon said.

Rome has also announced a bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Other candidates are expected to include Istanbul, Tokyo, Doha and Dubai.

The International Olympic Committee will choose the host city in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013.
