Cmilyte wins European individual women chess championship title

Finally after three silver medals and a wait for almost a full decade, Lithuania's Viktorija Cmilyte on Wednesday snatched the gold medal of the European Individual Women Chess Championship to materialize her long dream.

The ninth-seeded Lithuanian secured the 2011 European championship title with an easy draw off 37th-ranked Russian Svetlana Matveeva. The champion has garnered nine points from the 11 rounds of the championship which was played out as a Swiss system tournament.

Cmilyte posted eight wins, two draws and one defeat in Tbilisi. She won silver medals in 2003, 2008 and again last year.

Though with a win over the final champion in Round Six, Bulgaria's 2002 European champion Antoaneta Stefanova also had a draw on Wednesday only to settle for the silver medal, with 8.5 points from seven victories, three draws and one defeat.

With Wednesday's European championship gold medal, Cmilyte has so far got in her collection of competitive trophies such winning titles as the European Youth Champion for Girls (under 10), World Youth Champion for Girls (under 12), two Chess Olympiad gold medals and the World Women Rapidplay Champion.

Both Svetlana Matveeva and Elina Danielian of Armenia got eight points from 11 games, the seventh-seeded Armenian enjoyed a better rating grades to finish third overall at the 2011 European Individual Women Chess Championship.

A total of 130 players from 26 European nations and federations have participated in this year's European championship.
