World champion Subirats stars Venezuela swimming championship

More than 500 Venezuelan swimmers, including world 50 meter butterfly champion, participated the national swimming championship opened on Tuesday, the event organizers said.

The event will continue until May 21 and is held in the Bolivarian Swimming Pools of Barquisimeto, in Venezuela's north- central Lara state.

Local sports officials predict that the 23-year-old Albert Subirats will be the star of the tournament, following the youngster's world champion title in the 50 meter butterfly category. He is considered among the world's best in sprint swimming at the moment.

Subirats will compete in a variety of different categories, including 50 meter free, 50 meter back, 50 meter butterfly and 100 meter butterfly, while he also will compete in the three relays of 4x100 free, 4x200 free and 4x100 combined.

Other outstanding Venezuelan swimmers participating in the competition include Andreina Pinto, Cristian Quintero, Yanel Pinto, Octavio Alessi, Daniele Tirabassi, Leopoldo Andara, Arlene Semeco and Yesserick Pinto.

This competition serves as a qualifier for the national team in the upcoming Shanghai World Cup and The Guadalajara Games.
