Cristiano Ronaldo this Monday expressed the honor he felt at equaling the record of 38 goals scored in a season by a single player.

Ronaldo's two free kicks against Villarreal on Sunday night means he has scored 38 goals this season, equaling the record set by Athletic Club Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra in 1951 and Hugo Sanchez in 1989.

Ronaldo now has one more game, against already relegated Almeria next weekend, to set a new record, but speaking on Monday he expressed his pride at his achievement.

"The truth is that I didn't expect to score so many goals. It is an honor to catch two of the football greats," said the striker in the pages of the Monday edition of sports paper Diario AS.

"I still have one game left against Almeria, but I am not obsessed with the record. The important thing is for the team to win."

However, Ronaldo's personal triumph is tinged with disappointment in a season when Madrid have again finished behind FC Barcelona in the BBVA Primera Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League by their bitter rivals.

"This is my best season in terms of goals and I am happy for that, but I am not so happy for the team. We wanted to win the League and the Champions League. If I have scored as many goals as this, it is because the team is in form and because we have performed well," added Ronaldo.
