The 57th Military Pentathlon World Championships closed on Thursday after the obstacle relay for men and women.

Winning both men's and women's team events and Second Lieutenant Liu Kun grabbing individual gold and silver medals for Cadet Zhang Xue and Captain He Shugan, China has achieved the best in the Military Pentathlon Worlds.

On Thursday, the Chinese women's team added a final gold medal in the obstacle relay, finishing ahead of hosts the Netherlands and Russia. Turkey won the men relay before Venezuela and Russia, while China ended the fifth.

For Chinese Cadet Xiang Yuan, who won the newcomer ranking, the tournament ended in misery.

Climbing a two-meter wall, he slipped and fell on the ground. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and had to withdraw from this event. Luckily the injury didn't prevent Xiang Yuan from visiting the Chinese reception later that afternoon at the military base in Schaarsbergen.

Chinese ambassador Zhang Jun was the special guest at the reception, which was attended by businessmen, media, Dutch army officials and the Chinese delegation at the Military Worlds.

Colonel Nico Spreij, chief of the Dutch delegation in the International Military Sports Council (CISM), was also present.

"I am proud of what we achieved. It was a great tournament," he told Xinhua. "Focus on sports, high quality and low costs were our goals. I think we succeeded.

"I've seen tournaments before where looks seemed more important than the tournament itself. In this time of financial crisis I think it was the best choice to keep it sober and cheap."

The organization did encounter some difficulties. "The biggest problem during the tournament was the weather," Spreij said. "I think Schaarsbergen hasn't seen so much rain in a hundred years. To protect the safety of the participants we had to transfer some events and that proved to be the right decision."

After the reception the delegations moved to the closing ceremony, where the nations paraded for the last time.

The final medal ceremony took place and the Chinese delegation collected their medals. Finally the CSIM flag was lowered and Colonel Spreij handed it to the Brazilian delegation.

In July 2011, the World Military Games, which include the Pentathlon Worlds, will take place in Rio de Janeiro.
